Real Food, Real Dishes, Real Living

Today, so many things feel designed to be disposable—fast, convenient, and easily tossed aside. But here at BackRoadPicking, we live a little differently. We cook, we save, and we use things that last.

Cooking with Care

The other day I was talking with someone about food—fast food, convenience meals, take-out versus home cooking. It struck me how many people rely on packaged dinners and drive-throughs. That’s not us. In our house, we cook.

And by “we,” I really mean my mom—she lives with us and still makes dinner most nights. She bakes pies, cookies, cakes, puddings… you name it. Dinner in our home means real food: meat from the freezer (purchased from the butcher), vegetables from the garden or the freezer, and starches made from scratch. No boxed potatoes, no instant rice—just good food made with love.

Dishes with a Story

And when we sit down to eat? We use real dishes. Not paper. Not plastic. Real plates, bowls, cups, and glasses. Our cupboards are filled with Fiestaware—bought both new and vintage—a rainbow of colors that makes every meal feel special.

When we entertain, the serving trays, platters, and glassware aren’t just tools; they’re treasures. Some are family heirlooms, others are finds from estate sales or antique shops. And, of course, a few come directly from my BackRoadPicking hunts—because how could I resist keeping a little of what I love?

Blue Ridge Mountain Pottery, Limoges, Southern pottery—pieces that aren’t just beautiful, but functional. These dishes were made to be used, not hidden in a china cabinet.

Mixing It Up

One of my favorite things about vintage tableware is how today’s style embraces the mix. Dishes don’t have to match perfectly anymore. You can blend patterns, colors, and eras to create a table that reflects your personality. Maybe every place setting is different. Maybe you mix Depression glass with modern pottery. The magic is in the mix—and it’s what makes your table feel warm, welcoming, and uniquely yours.

The BackRoadPicking Way

Here’s what I always tell people:

“Vintage dishes were meant to be enjoyed—not hidden away. Pull yours out, mix them up, and create a table full of personality!”

And if you’re hunting for something special to add to your own collection, check out our ever-growing selection at BackRoadPicking.com. You’ll find everything from colorful Fiestaware to elegant crystal and pottery that’s ready to make your next meal (or gathering) feel timeless.
