Remembering the King Cole Restaurant: A Dayton Icon

At Backroad Picking, we love celebrating history by bringing timeless treasures back to life. One of the most iconic names in Dayton’s dining history is the King Cole Restaurant, a fine-dining establishment that once stood as a beacon of elegance and culinary excellence. Today, we’re thrilled to share a bit of its story—and even offer you a chance to own a piece of its legacy.

The History of King Cole Restaurant in Dayton

The King Cole Restaurant first opened its doors in 1953, founded by Max Comisar. Situated at 34 W. Second St., near the bustling Rike’s department store, it quickly established itself as the pinnacle of fine dining in Dayton. Known for its gourmet steaks, seafood, and impeccable service, the restaurant became a favorite destination for special occasions and business gatherings alike.

Why King Cole Was a Dayton Dining Icon

Step into the King Cole during its heyday, and you’d be greeted by an atmosphere of pure sophistication. With fine art adorning the walls, crystal chandeliers casting a warm glow, and seating for up to 500 guests, the restaurant offered more than just a meal—it provided an unforgettable experience. In the 1960s, Esquire magazine even recognized the King Cole as one of the nation’s 25 best restaurants.

The Journey of King Cole Through Time

As Dayton’s downtown evolved, so did the King Cole. In 1975, the restaurant relocated to the Kettering Tower, adapting to the changing landscape while maintaining its signature charm. However, shifts in dining trends and the rise of suburban eateries brought challenges. By the 1990s, patronage had declined, and in May 1998, the King Cole served its final meal, marking the end of an era.
