A few months ago, while I was working in my booth at the Peddlers Mall in Lebanon, Ohio, a couple of ladies stopped to chat. As it turned out, one of them had a sister who needed help liquidating some items—many of them large pieces—and she wasn’t sure where to start.
Kevin and I made an appointment to meet her. Normally, we just advise on these kinds of situations and occasionally take items on consignment. We often partner with auction houses or estate sale companies but usually stay out of running sales ourselves. This time, though, we decided to take on a small estate sale. It was a lot of work—but also deeply rewarding.
Because in the process, we made a friend.
Our client, whom I’ll call “M,” was a joy to work with. She appreciated our help, and we appreciated the opportunity to lend a hand. Over our lives, we’ve been on the receiving end of help many times, and “paying it forward” is something I try to live by.
Beyond that, M became a friend we’ll stay in touch with—no matter the distance. She’s moving to another state, but phones, texts, and emails have no borders. She also trusted us with several items that didn’t sell, and we’ll care for them as if they were our own until they find their forever homes.
Over the past year, I’ve met several wonderful people at the Peddlers Mall who’ve made a difference in my life—the friendly ladies who work there, the loyal customers who stop to chat, and a few fellow shop owners who’ve become friends. The Peddlers Mall may be about 30 minutes from home, but what a blessing it’s been to make such meaningful connections there.
It’s funny how life works. Sometimes we cross paths with people at exactly the right moment, without realizing how meaningful it will be. I truly believe God puts us where we’re meant to be, exactly when we’re meant to be there.
That day at the Peddlers Mall wasn’t just another workday—it was a reminder that the right place, the right time, and the right people can turn business into friendship.
