If you've walked through a home décor store lately, you've probably noticed something interesting.
The "new" styles suddenly look a whole lot like...well...the stuff Grandma already had, or what we grew up with.
Distressed wood. Brass accents. Colorful glassware. Floral china. Woven baskets. Vintage-inspired artwork.
That's because vintage isn't just making a comeback, it never really left. But younger people are discovering how to create their own style with pieces from the past.
For years everything had to match...and apparently every wall, couch, cabinet, and floor had to be painted the exact same shade of that damn Millennial Gray. Somewhere along the way we collectively decided every house should look like the inside of a concrete block.
Today, it's about creating a home that feels personal, tells a story, and reflects who you are.... With Color, Groupings, and even some (gasp) ..... CLUTTER!
That's where vintage shines.
A Home Should Feel Collected, Not Ordered
One of the biggest decorating trends today is moving away from showroom-perfect spaces. THANK GOODNESS, who wants to live in a showroom?
Homes are meant for living.
Not perfection.
Honestly, there is something unsettling about a house that looks like nobody has ever sat on the couch.
Instead of buying an entire matching collection, people are mixing old and new to create rooms that shine personality. And they are discovering new styles they love
A modern sofa paired with a vintage side table.
A sleek kitchen with colorful Pyrex bowls, or maybe Fiestaware - which is still made today.
A farmhouse dining room featuring restaurant ware from the 1940s, Shenango China has been a hidden gem for years.
Vintage pieces bring warmth and personality to your space, they give it character, personalize it, and make it your own!
Quality That Was Built to Last
Many vintage items were made during a time when products were designed to last for decades, not until the next trend arrived.
Heavy glass.
Solid wood.
Hand-thrown pottery.
Thick cotton linens.
Metal kitchen tools that still work perfectly after 50 years - They may need some scrubbing, but they are awesome to use once cleaned up!
There's something satisfying about using an item that has already stood the test of time.
Every Piece Has a Story
One of my favorite parts about selling vintage is wondering where each piece has been. I talk about this often, and sometimes know the stories of the items I sell -- Not always, but sometimes. And when I do? I love to share that info!
But knowing that serving platters were used for family dinners, or Sunday gatherings
A candlestick holder lived on the mantle at grandmas and got moved to the table for special occasions.
That colorful mixing bowl probably helped bake hundreds of birthday cakes..Or maybe some Angel food cake (that's what my grandma made me!)
We'll never know every story, but every piece has one, and it's fun to think about
Plus, you get to make your own stories, your own memories. Create your own history with items your kids, grandkids, or friends find endearing.
Sustainable Shopping Without Sacrificing Style
Buying vintage is one of the easiest ways to decorate more sustainably. This is a big deal. Keeping items out of the landfill. Less of the 'throw away' society crap in our homes. Real items, that can withstand real use, and be around for a longer period of tiem.
Less waste.
Less landfill.
More character.
It's recycling, but with style, and purpose, it's sustainable home decorating!
Nostalgia Is Back
One reason vintage is so popular today is simple:
People want things that remind them of home, of grandma, their childhood, or a special memory.
The casserole dish Grandma used for mac-n-cheese?
The Christmas decorations that went up every year when you were a kid?
The barware your parents had, that you were never allowed to touch!
The toys you couldn't wait to play, and then played with them so much you wore them out!
The cookie jar you KNEW was full of grandmas homemade cookies.
These items don't just decorate a room, a house, a corner, they bring back memories, create a smile, or spark some love.
You Don't Have to Buy Expensive Collectibles
When people hear "vintage," they often think of rare collectibles with big price tags.
The truth is, some of the best vintage finds are everyday items, that is affordable vintage decor with reasonable prices, and they are within reach in so many places. Of course we have eBay, which is a vintage lovers dream. ETSY, which also has a ton of vintage items. Of course we would also love for you to browse Backroadpicking.com
Think about:
- Colorful vintage kitchenware
- Glassware (I drink out of snoopy, smurff, and muppet baby, vintage glassware)
- Serving bowls and platters - often in wonderful colors and widely available
- Woven baskets
- Framed artwork
- Brass accents
- Vintage Table linens
- Holiday décor from the MCM era
- Wooden trays
- Barware
These pieces add charm without breaking the budget.
Vintage Fits Every Style
Whether your home leans farmhouse, cottage, mid-century modern, eclectic, coastal, or contemporary, vintage works.
One thoughtfully chosen piece can completely change the feel of a room.
A vintage lamp.
An old mirror.
A colorful pitcher.
A handmade pottery bowl.
Sometimes it's a little details that make a difference in how you feel about a room, an area, or even your whole home.
One of my favorite vintage decorating tricks is mixing decades. A 1950s bowl sits on a shelf next to a vase from the 1980s. Your home doesn't have to be a museum. It should look like your story.
Decorate with Things You Love
Trends will come and go.
The best homes aren't built around what's popular this season, they're built around the things that make you smile every time you walk into the room. Personally one of my favorite things is an old stereo cabinet that is very mid-century. It barely works, but I don't care. I LOVE the look. One day, it will work again, but until then, I can look at it and smile. That's how we decorate with vintage
The beauty of vintage is that No one else has your exact collection, your exact style. You are writing your own story with every piece you add, you are the 'currator' of your story.
