Aruba vs. Bonaire vs. Curaçao: Which ABC Island is Best on a Carnival Cruise?

One of my favorite Carnival itineraries is the ABC Islands. While they're all part of the southern Caribbean and only a short distance apart, they each have their own personality and are worth experiencing differently.

Most Carnival itineraries spend:

  • Aruba: Approximately 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM
  • Bonaire: Approximately 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM
  • Curaçao: Approximately 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Here's how I would compare them after visiting all three.

Aruba - The Beach Lover's Paradise

If your perfect cruise day involves soft white sand, turquoise water, and relaxing under a palm tree, Aruba wins.

The island is extremely tourist-friendly, making it easy for first-time visitors to get around. Beautiful beaches like Eagle Beach, Palm Beach, and Arashi Beach are all easily accessible, and the shopping options are excellent.

Downtown Oranjestad offers plenty of stores within walking distance of the ship, while Palm Beach features larger shopping areas and a mall for those looking to spend the afternoon browsing.

Food lovers won't be disappointed either. Aruba has outstanding restaurants, and if you enjoy seafood, try the local barracuda, which is absolutely delicious when it's on the menu.

One of Aruba's biggest advantages is its public transportation system. The buses are inexpensive, reliable, and run from downtown to Eagle Beach, Palm Beach, and Arashi Beach, making it easy to explore without booking an excursion.

The island feels very safe and welcoming. Like anywhere tourists gather, petty theft can happen, but overall the locals are friendly and tourism is a major part of daily life.

Best for: Beach days, shopping, restaurants, and easy independent exploration.

Bonaire - Relaxed Caribbean Charm

Bonaire is the smallest of the three islands and has a completely different vibe.

Rather than focusing on large resorts and shopping, Bonaire is famous for its incredible marine life and world-class diving. Even if you're not a diver, the slower pace makes it one of the most relaxing cruise stops you'll visit.

The downtown area is literally steps from the cruise pier, making it easy to spend several hours wandering colorful streets filled with local shops, restaurants, and waterfront cafés.

For something different, consider renting a golf cart and touring the island yourself. Most rentals are available for six to eight hours, giving you plenty of time to explore the salt flats, flamingos, and scenic coastline at your own pace. Scooter rentals are also commonly available.

The atmosphere feels authentic, laid-back, and distinctly Caribbean.

Best for: Relaxing, sightseeing, local culture, snorkeling, diving, and self-guided exploration.

Curaçao - Culture, Color, and History

Curaçao feels more like a living Caribbean city than a tourist destination.

It's greener and hillier than Aruba and Bonaire, with colorful Dutch architecture and a vibrant local culture that makes it a wonderful island to simply explore.

While Curaçao does have beautiful beaches, many are smaller and created within protected coves because much of the coastline is naturally rocky. They aren't quite as expansive or as easy to access as Aruba's beaches, although taxis and public transportation can take you to several excellent options.

The real highlight is downtown Willemstad.

Walking through the historic waterfront, colorful buildings, and local neighborhoods gives you a chance to experience everyday island life.

One attraction you shouldn't miss is the Queen Emma Bridge, the floating pontoon bridge that swings open to allow ships to pass. Watching it move—and walking across it—is a uniquely Curaçao experience.

Nearby, the Fort Rif area offers shopping, restaurants, and historic architecture that make for a pleasant afternoon stroll.

Best for: History, architecture, culture, photography, and exploring on foot.

My Ideal Three-Day ABC Island Plan

If you're fortunate enough to visit all three islands on the same cruise, I'd recommend experiencing each one differently.

Cruise essentials, check my Amazon shop for some of my favorite items!

🏖️ Aruba: Spend the day at the beach, enjoy the crystal-clear water, then finish with dinner at one of Aruba's excellent local restaurants.

🚗 Bonaire: Rent a golf cart and explore the island at your own pace before ending the evening with a sunset cruise if one is available.

🌴 Curaçao: Visit Mambo Beach in the morning, then spend the afternoon walking through downtown Willemstad, crossing the Queen Emma Bridge, and exploring the Fort Rif area.

Each island offers something unique, and trying to make them all into beach days would mean missing what makes each destination special.

If I had to summarize them in one sentence:

  • Aruba: Beach paradise with shopping and restaurants.
  • Bonaire: Relaxed island life and outdoor adventure.
  • Curaçao: Caribbean culture, history, and colorful city exploration.

That's what makes the ABC Islands one of the best cruise itineraries in the Caribbean.
